Allee: So tell me about your experience with community service in Easton.

Haley: There has been many opportunities to do community service in Easton. I’ve done it since I was a kid. Starting with My Brother’s Keeper which is over in - it’s on - it’s in Easton over by Stoneforge Grill. I spent a lot of ti- Christmases wrapping gifts there. I also worked and delivered food to different low income families around the Easton area. But most importantly was my time at Oliver Ames. Oliver Ames was a great part of my academic career because of their dedication to community service. I was part of National Honors Society where there was a requirement to do community service but I also did a lot of different clubs like Best Buddies, Make-A-Wish and the Senior Residence Kindness Club where we would go to local nursing homes and just kind of plan activities. But the most important was my senior project. There’s a class at Oliver Ames where you - 15 students are selected to do a project of their choice. And that’s where I created the Puzzle Piece Project where I raised awareness for Autism and raised money to purchase sensory integration materials for the elementary schools in Easton.

Allee: That’s amazing

Haley: Thank you

Allee: So how did you develop this project or what inspired you to work with Autism in your service in that class?

Haley: So my inspiration came initially from my younger sister who does have ASD, so that’s where it first became - it started. Then when I was in fourth grade you could sign up to be a buddy to someone who has special needs. So I had- My best friend was a boy who had Down Syndrome and I hung out with him at recess. And then starting in eighth grade all the way through high school I did the Best Buddies program. And then in - just in general I just helped out with the community with this specific area.

Allee: Awesome. So how do you think that, you know, being an Easton resident and being at the Easton schools has really allowed you to find a passion for community service?

Haley: I think just in general, the general community of Easton is just focused so heavenly, um, heavily, on helping others in need there are so many different organizations in Easton that are always willing to help. For fundraisers local businesses are always offering aid. Like, for my own senior project I had Piesco Sporting Goods which is located in Easton offering help - not donate but like helped me like set up a way to create a fundraiser that helped me raise over $1,000 for my cause. So just in general the community of Easton is always just willing to reach out and help anyone that’s looking for it and just aiding in projects like that.

Allee: Awesome. And lastly, how do you think that you’ll continue this spirit of service moving forward?

Haley: I think I will continue it by what I plan to do at Boston College. I- They are a very big community service oriented university. But at the same time Easton is created this love of community service in me and they’ll continue to instill it in others. I’m going to be a special needs teacher in the future and I hope that one day I can give back to Easton what they taught me.

Allee: Awesome. Thank you so much for your time today.

Haley: Thank you.
